A unique sound arose from the streets of New York in the late seventies and that sound was hip hop. Hip hop has since become a worldwide cultural force, that was born from the street parties and music clubs of New York over twenty years ago. Originally hip hop was the musical development of urban Africa-American culture and still holds firm roots within the culture, but modern hip hop is not bound by geography and culture. Since the early 90's hip hop's consumer base has been open to every ethnic culture and geographical location.

The simplest definition of hip hop music is a combination of DJ mixing rhythmic elements of albums, while a rapper raps over the beats. But hip hop is much more than just a music style, it has developed its own lyrical styles, dance styles, language, visual arts (graffiti) and fashions. The style of hip hop is no longer bound to the urban life, but has been adopted by all walks of life, suburban and urban, young or old.

Hip Hop Clothing

Traditional hip hop clothing and it's core style reside in baggy jeans, oversized jerseys and top brand trainers, more recently adorned with expensive jewelry and some military clothing influences. This suburban emulation of urban clothing styles not only confirms the cross-cultural popularity of hip-hop clothing, but it also recognizes the importance of the "street" in determining fashion trends, and in many cases to a much larger degree than the catwalk does.

Fashion and music in the past have enjoyed a creative relationship and often big-name fashion designers are the last to jump on the boat. It took almost 20 years for the mainstream fashion industry to even start experimenting with hip-hop clothing.
